Winning Mega Millions ticket was sold in California
The Mega Millions draw on Friday night proved to be quite the lucky one for one ticket holder in the California area.
The jackpot for the Mega Millions drawing was worth an estimated $180 million, and there were millions of players across the USA’s 43 member states who were hoping that they’d get a slice of the winnings. And while only one ticket holder managed to get their hands on the top prize, there were also plenty of secondary prizes up for grabs.
The ticket that matched all of the five main numbers 5, 31, 34, 41 and 74 as well as the Mega number of 3 was sold at a 7-Eleven store in Calimesa, according to the California Lottery. While lottery officials have not yet revealed who the winner is, we do know that they will be faced with the decision of choosing between a $180 million pay-out in annuities over 30 years, or a $107 lump sum payment.
This jackpot was the biggest since a $259.8 million Powerball jackpot was won in Tennessee in June and it was the first time the Mega Millions grand prize has been on a streak over $100 million for the last two months as well. There was another millionaire to be found after the lottery drawing, and one player from Pennsylvania found themselves the lucky sole claimant of a $1 million prize fund as they matched just the first five numbers in Friday night’s draw, missing out on the Mega number.
Lottery players will now look to the Powerball lottery for the next big jackpot, as its grand prize is currently climbing towards the $100 million mark. Both multi-state lotteries have between them produced six jackpots worth $399 million or more in the ten months from May 2013 to March 2014, so lottery players will be hopeful that one of them will produce a jackpot of equal grandeur before too long.
The jackpot for the Mega Millions’ next drawing on Tuesday, August 26th will reboot back to $15 million.
