Getting your Christmas shopping finished is always a relief but for a family from Canberra in Australia it proved to be an astonishing experience. A reminder to check tickets purchased for the Oz Lotto draw held on December 16 led to the discovery they had won 30 million Australian dollars a week after the draw was held.
The lottery winners have decided to remain anonymous but the wife did speak to reporters about the amazing win: “I was finishing off my Christmas shopping today and saw a sign at the outlet urging customers to check their entries because they had sold the 30 million Australian dollar winning Oz Lotto ticket.
“I thought I’d better check my Oz Lotto entry but I never considered that I actually had the winning ticket. I never win anything,” she said. The mother of two says that they plan to use their Australian Lottery winnings to pay off their mortgage and fly first class when they take their next overseas holiday.
The lucky ticket managed to match all seven numbers drawn to win the First Division prize. The win was the first jackpot to be claimed since the Oz Lotto draw held on November 4. The winning numbers for the draw were: 04-11-20-21-25-42 and 45 with supplementary numbers 1 and 23.
Christian Bleich, the co-owner of the newsXpress newsagents in the Woden shopping centre that sold the winning ticket said: “She came in, put the ticket through and she had won. She’s a regular here and a very nice person, she’s very deserving.”
Mr Bleich said it was great to see the winner’s reaction in person.”It was probably one of the best reactions; you have to see it to believe it. You’ve got shock and awe, she was just amazed.”
Earlier in the month two tickets, both worth 1 million Australian dollars had been sold in news agencies in Gungahlin and Evatt. The Evat Newsagency seems to be a very lucky place to buy tickets for the Oz Lotto with more than 2.2m Australian dollars worth of prizes purchased there in the past six months.
