New Yorker is $165 million richer thanks to Mega Millions
Somebody from New York State in the US can relax while the $800 million Powerball lottery draw tonight as they have already won to the tune of $165 million.
The mystery winner who was revealed just hours after the Mega Millions draw took place, was the sole winner of the $165 million bounty after their ticket for the multi-state lottery matched numbers 11, 39, 51, 57 and 75 as well as the Mega Ball of 2. The Mega Millions jackpot was last won on Friday 13th in November. According to Mega Millions officials, the lucky winner allowed the lottery computer to pick the numbers for them as they purchased their ticket at a store in Staten Island, New York City, prior to the draw taking place.
New Yorkers seem to be lucky lottery players, as a lottery retailer was recently revealed to have won 16 times in two years. Had this particular draw not been won, the combined jackpots of both multi-state lottery games, the Mega Millions and the Powerball, would have most certainly been close to, if not surpassing, the $1 billion mark. However as it stands, the value of the Powerball lottery which is set to be drawn this evening is $800 million, the largest lottery jackpot in US lottery history.
This is one of the biggest lottery prizes to have been won in New York since a chef from Queens won $10 million on a scratch card in October last year. As well as the $165 million jackpot winner, last night’s Mega Millions draw also saw two $1 million second tier prize winners who each matched the five main numbers only. One of those tickets was purchased in Maryland and the other in Texas.
The festive New York win comes almost a year exactly since a construction worker from Yonkers won $5 million on a scratchcard on Christmas Day in 2014. Meanwhile, the EuroMillions lottery was also drawn on Friday evening, and the game that takes place across a multitude of countries in Europe was worth £44 million, and the winning numbers in the game were 5, 26, 33, 35 and 40, with two Lucky Stars of 3 and 8.
In order to win the jackpot, a player had to match all of those numbers and unfortunately nobody was able to, which means that the jackpot will be worth £51 million on Tuesday. One UK lottery player did win £1 million, however, thanks to the UK Millionaire Maker raffle which had a winning code of HXH763610.
