A lottery player from Maryland in the USA has said goodbye to 2017 in style as he collected a $50,000 Powerball lottery prize which he won back in August.

The lucky lottery winner, from Silver Spring, won his $50,000 prize on August 23rd, but didn’t claim it until the end of December, saying that he was too busy to claim before! The 65-year-old bus driver chose to remain anonymous when he received his prize on December 28th, but he did tell Powerball lottery officials the story of how he came to win $50,000. Recently, a man from Ohio found himself the winner of a Maryland Powerball prize thanks to his job across the state line.

On August 23rd 2017, the Powerball player was on his way to the post office when he spotted a Maryland Lottery retailer on his way and decided to stop off on his way home. A regular player of Maryland’s Multi-Match lottery, this time the Silver Springs man thought he’d try something different, and standing in the Wheaton Winery store, he decided to play Powerball. Another bus driver from Brooklyn in New York also recently won a top Cash4Life lottery prize thanks to a last minute decision to change his game.

“Something in my mind said you need to buy two Powerball tickets,” the lottery winner said, adding that the draw came and went and the fact that he had two tickets completely slipped his mind until two weeks later. “Two weeks later, I looked up my ticket results and I was in shock and awe,” he said. “I had to get the winning ticket verified.” A Canadian Lotto Max winner from British Columbia also described himself as “in awe” when he won $1 million last year.

The Maryland man got his Powerball ticket verified, but still took four months to claim his prize. “I was just busy with work and stuff,” the bus driver said. “I realised that if I didn’t go soon, I wouldn’t be able to claim my winnings,” he laughed, referring to the 182-day deadline to claim Powerball prizes. A Canadian Lotto 649 winner didn’t even realise he’d won $5 million until four months after the draw date, while a EuroMillions winner from Bristol in England also took three months to claim their £1 million prize.

The lucky Powerball winner plans to use his winnings towards his imminent retirement, and buy himself a new guitar.
