A man from Tasmania, an Australian island to the south of the country, has won a huge $30 million jackpot on the Australian Powerball lottery.

The lucky Powerball winner chose to remain anonymous as he claimed his prize, but he was the sole winner of the division one Powerball prize drawn last Thursday, September 20. The man told lottery officials that it took him some time to believe that the ticket he held was the winner of the huge $30 million jackpot.

“I checked the ticket online. Then I checked it again,” he told Australian Powerball officials, revealing that even after double checking himself, he had to ask his wife to check for him, and the pair of them spent hours making sure that his ticket really was the winner. A man from Saskatchewan in Canada had to wake his wife up to tell her they’d won $1 million on the Lotto Max, while another Canadian from Toronto said that he checked his ticket three times before believing he’d won the Lotto Max jackpot.

The Tasmanian man purchased his winning Powerball ticket from Sorrell Hub Lotto store on Cole Street in Sorrell, Tasmania, and the owner of the store told lottery officials that he was delighted to have sold a winner. A lottery retailer in Ireland was celebrating last month after they sold a winning Irish Lotto ticket for the first time in 28 years.

Dean Silver said that the Powerball jackpot win coming locally was “magnificent” for the community, “Everyone always says the big wins go to the mainland, but not this time – we did it,” Mr Silver said. “You know any win is good, but $30 million – well that is fantastic”. Recent Australian Powerball winners have included a grandfather from new South Wales who took home a $3 million jackpot, and a man from Canberra, the capital of Australia who said that he didn’t sleep for days after winning $50 million on the Australian Powerball.

The store owner revealed that his regular customers are certain that the store will begin a winning streak of selling lucky tickets, “I hope I deliver more wins to my customers,” he said. The lucky Australian Powerball winner revealed that his lottery ticket purchase was a last-minute decision, and because he didn’t buy it with his registered lottery card, it took five days for lottery officials to find him, “I bought this ticket spur of the moment,” he explained. The winning numbers were 20-6-30-17-8-10-2 and the Powerball 8.
