Ohio Ticket Wins $139.3m Powerball Lottery Jackpot
It’s been another massive week for lottery players around the world. The biggest win has been seen in the USA with a $139.3 million Powerball jackpot won on Wednesday.
Fifth Powerball jackpot win this year
A ticket sold in Ohio won the jackpot and it’s the fifth time that the Powerball top prize has been won this year.
The winner can receive their prize as an annuity or a one-off payment of $66.5 million, both subject to state and federal taxes. Saturday’s draw has a $20 million jackpot.
Holiday delight
A couple from Co Louth in Ireland won a €49,253 lottery prize on June 1. It took a while for them to claim their prize as they were on a foreign holiday.
The husband said he’d bought a ticket two days before going on holiday so he didn’t miss the draw. Their win was discovered as he was enjoying the view from his holiday apartment balcony.
They plan on using some of their winnings on house renovations and going on another holiday overseas.
Couldn’t be bothered
In Australia, a man from Melbourne won $1 million in the July 1 Weekday Windfall lottery draw.
It was late at night that he discovered his win. He had to wake his partner up to ask her to confirm that his lottery ticket had won $1 million.
Amazingly, he almost didn’t buy a ticket saying; “I really couldn’t be bothered.” He’d gone to a newsagency to buy a ticket but there was a queue and he walked out without buying one.
“Then this thought came over me,” he recalled and decided to buy a ticket. He’s been playing the same numbers for four decades and he’s finally won a big prize. Another lottery player won $1.7 million after playing the same numbers for 35 years.
Most of his winnings will be given to his two sons who both have mortgages to pay. As for himself and his wife, he said: “As long as we have food on the table and a roof over our heads, we’re happy.”
