Mega Millions lottery jackpots to grow with proposed changes

Determined Mega Millions players will not be deterred by the news that the operator of the American multi-state lottery game plans to broaden the odds of winning its lottery jackpot.

Currently Mega Millions players choose five numbers between 1 and 56 and one Mega Ball number between 1 and 46. However on 22nd October this year players will choose five numbers between 1 and 75 and one Mega Ball number between 1 and 15. The game’s new structure will see the odds to win the lottery jackpot change; they are currently 1 in approximately 175.7 million.

The decision to increase the difficulty of winning Mega Millions top prize is to drive lottery ticket sales and ultimately provide bigger jackpots. Something reiterated by Norm Lingle, the lottery director of the South Dakota Lottery Commission: “The idea is not to keep more money but to raise more money. Unfortunately, the way to make jackpots grow bigger is to make it more difficult to win.”

However the odds of winning one of the lower-tier prizes will not alter, and remain a 1 in 40 chance.

There are nine ways to win a prize with Mega Millions, and that includes the lottery jackpot. Lower-tier prizes are fixed amounts that do not fluctuate, regardless of the size of the lotto jackpot. Winning a second-tier prize awards ticket-holders with a $250,000 payout for matching the first five numbers drawn, excluding the Mega Ball.

Mega Millions draws will continue to take place every Tuesday and Friday at WSB-TV studios in Atlanta, Georgia despite the changes to the lottery game in the autumn. Players will still have a chance to win the proposed larger jackpots twice a week. UK and International players can also play online. It’s so easy to buy your Mega Millions lottery tickets online at!
