Ever since it was announced that a ticket sold in Ireland had won the €86.7m jackpot in the EuroMillions draw held on Friday September 19, the gossip has been mounting about who the lucky winner is. Hence the excitement among the neighbours in Swinford, County Mayo, when it was believed a supermarket staff syndicate were the big winners.

It was on Saturday morning (September 20) that the Kennedy’s EuroSpar supermarket, owned by Derek Kennedy, made an important announcement on their Facebook page. They proudly revealed that a syndicate comprising of 15 members of staff had been winners in the previous night’s EuroMillions draw. The post led to frantic speculation that the jackpot winners were about to be revealed.

The post even included a photo of the winning ticket and said: “All relevant staff have turned up on time for work as they want to keep things as normal as possible until the news sinks in. Reports that some other members of staff who were not on yesterday but would have paid in cannot be confirmed at this point in time.”

When the truth about their win was finally revealed it proved to be a lot less than the massive jackpot. A member of staff confirmed that the syndicate did indeed have a win in Friday’s draw but then revealed: “We won alright – a tidy €5, which amounts to an amazing 33 cents each!”

Sadly their winnings didn’t last very long. The syndicate decided to reinvest their €5 in the EuroMillions draw held on Tuesday September 23. Derek Kennedy revealed “Unfortunately, our gamble didn’t pay off and we won nothing: Easy come, easy go!”

However there is good news for shoppers at Kennedy’s EuroSpar. Derek has confirmed that this Friday will have a special promotion at the store entitled ‘Friday Fiver.’ So even though the staff hasn’t become millionaires, the supermarket owner says “everyone will be a winner with us.”

The actual winner of the jackpot has yet to come forward and claim their prize. The winning numbers were: 6-8-34-38-48 with the Lucky Stars 3 and 9.
