A EuroMillions winner almost missed out on a life changing lottery prize, but was able to celebrate at the last minute after finding his ticket in an old wallet.

James Wilson, 28, from Bradley Stoke, South Gloucestershire had no idea that he had won any money on the EuroMillions, and had he decided to clear out his old wallet just one day later, he would never have been able to claim it. As he was looking through his wallet, he stumbled upon the ticket and decided to check the numbers ‘just in case’.

You can imagine the shock that Mr Wilson felt when he discovered that his ticket from the draw on March 28th 2014 was worth over £50,000, and that he had only one more day to claim it. Mr Wilson said that he called Camelot straight away to claim his £51,232.90 prize, but it was so late in the evening at that point that he had to wait until the morning to call again.

“I can’t tell you how relieved I was when I got through to someone the following morning and they confirmed I wasn’t too late to claim my prize,” said Mr Wilson as he celebrated his EuroMillions win with champagne. After meeting with National Lottery officials, Mr Wilson discovered that the lottery had been advertising the unclaimed ticket in the press for the past six months, but clearly not enough to get the winner’s attention.

“It was purely luck that I stumbled upon the ticket before it expired,” said the lucky winner, who has recently got married and is currently living with his wife at her parents’ house. The couple plan to spend their lottery winnings on a deposit to buy a house of their own, and Mr Wilson said that he also hopes to spend some of the money on his love of bike racing, as well as treating his wife to a new car.

The winner said that he is looking forward to house hunting and hoping that he will still be able to afford some treats along the way. He did add that he doesn’t plan to stop playing the EuroMillions lottery.
