Irish Lotto winner keeps it in the family

Lottery24 – Irish Lotto winner keeps it in the familyAn Irish Lotto player who won big on Saturday night’s draw has revealed that he purchased his ticket from his brother-in-law’s store, keeping the win well and truly in the family.

Gerard Murphy, a lottery player from Ballinrobe in Co Mayo, purchased his ticket for the draw on Saturday evening from the Day Today store on Main Street in the town, which is owned by Martin Murphy. The ticket matched numbers 3, 7, 11, 33, 37 and 42 to win the jackpot worth €6,384,673, while the other Mr Murphy, the store owner, will be receiving an as yet undisclosed bonus from the National Lottery. This family lottery coup is not unlike that of an Irish Lotto player who is her family’s good luck charm after she won £250,000 on an Irish Lotto Plus 1 ticket.

Martin Murphy told lottery officials that he had heard that his store sold the Irish Lotto winning ticket, but had no idea that it was one of his relatives. “Little did I know initially that a relative of my own had bought the winning ticket,” he said of his discovery. “I just couldn’t believe it when Gerard popped in to say he had the winning ticket.” He added that originally he had thought it was a prank, because “that’s the type of guy Ger is,” but soon realised that it was not a joke at all.

Congratulating his brother-in-law, Mr Martin Murphy said that he couldn’t be happier for his relative. “It’s a massive win and it’s great that his mother, Mamie, is still alive to celebrate the big windfall,” he said, continuing to say that Gerard has been very calm about his win ever since he found out about his multi-million euro win, “he doesn’t plan to do anything as of yet, he is just sitting tight.”

The winning Mr Murphy said that his Irish Lotto win was based on the same numbers that he has been playing for 20 years, which come from the birthdays of his four children. Mr Murphy is a carpenter, and his brother-in-law said that he expected the Irish Lotto winner would continue working even after his big win: “He’s got children and lots of family so I’m sure he’ll help them out,” he said.
