Sometimes it takes a long while to get a big lottery win, but for two members of an Irish lottery syndicate, it took just one draw. The syndicate won €150,000 in the Tuesday December 15 EuroMillions draw.
The five co-workers have been described as “spontaneous” by one of its members. He added about who actually plays “all depends on who’s there when we decide to play.” That was the case for this EuroMillions draw and for two of the lucky players it was the first draw they’d taken part in. Back in September a syndicate of Canadian croupiers won $1m in the first Lotto Max draw they played. A group of English bricklayers played the UK Lotto for 20 years before winning a £69,000 prize.
They’re the latest syndicate to win a big prize in the EuroMillions lottery. A group of cleaning ladies from Scotland won £1m on the EuroMillions in March of this year.
All five of the syndicate members are male and their winning ticket was purchased in a Eurospar in Dublin’s Sandymount. Their ticket matched the five main balls and one of the lucky stars. If they’d managed to match the other Lucky Star they’d have been celebrating winning the EuroMillions jackpot. The winning numbers in the draw were: 08-11-23-27-35 and the two Lucky Stars 04 and 11.
It’s the latest win for players in Ireland. Earlier this year someone in Cork won a €500,000 EuroMillions Plus prize.
For one of the winners the windfall has come just at the right time. He was one of the first-time players and said “I was down to my last €5. I even had to borrow money to get to work the next day!”
The winner added, “I said to myself ‘this had better work or I’m busted!’ And now look! I’m over €30,000 richer.” He plans on using his winnings to have a “really great Christmas” and also give some to his family. Last year a first-time player in America won a $90m Powerball jackpot.
Other syndicate members are planning to help their friends and family, while one wants to buy a house.
