A Maryland man who found himself in the Christmas spirit before buying a holiday themed scratch card was certainly cheerful after winning $50,000.

The lottery player, from the Abingdon area in Maryland, told lottery officials that the new holiday themed Holiday Riches scratch card caught his eye last week when he enjoyed coffee at the Royal Farms store in Monkton. The 38 year of Maryland Lottery player works as an appliance repairmen, and spends a lot of time on the road.

Last weekend, as he enjoyed a well-earned coffee break at the lottery retailer in Monkton, he bought a rare scratch off ticket, scratching it off to reveal at huge $50,000 top prize. A recent Mega Millions winner from Texas became $177 million richer after a stop for coffee. The Maryland Lottery winner told officials that he is a rare scratch card player, and that it was a series of random events that led to his big win. Another recent Maryland lottery winner admitted to being an occasional player after winning $20,000.

Just like a recent New York Millions scratch card winner who enjoyed a coffee while her husband scratched off her lottery ticket, the winner finished off his coffee and bought his ticket, he took it out to the car and scratched it there, and after matching one of the lucky numbers he took it back inside the store to check out exactly how lucky he’d been. Once the self-scanning machine revealed his $50,000 prize, however, the Maryland resident said that he suddenly became speechless and felt dazed, just like a lottery winner from Washington state after winning $120,000 on the Hit 5 lottery.

A grin wasn’t far behind, however, and the big-time winner was delighted to claim his $50,000 prize from Maryland Lottery officials, telling them that he plans to use his winnings to pay off some of his mortgage payments. The keen musician also plans to pursue his musical passion, buying tickets for himself and his sister to attend an upcoming Grateful Dead concert. He also hopes to boost his savings account. A recent lottery player from Indiana was actually supposed to be at a concert when they won their $16.5 million on the Hoosier Lottery!
