FINANCIAL SECURITY AND A 1930S SUIT FOR £18M WINNING UK LOTTO FAMILY
A Bristol couple who are both in their 80’s have been revealed as the winners of the jackpot won in the February 17 UK Lotto draw. Shirley and Dennis Banfield have promised their two daughters will now have “stress-free futures”
The couple – who met on a blind date – have been married for 60 years. At a press conference in Gloucester, Mr Banfield broke down in tears as he spoke about how their win will help their two daughters Tina, 54 and Karen, 51.
The UK Lotto winners are believed to be the oldest jackpot winning couple. Vic Eden from Staffordshire, England was 80 when winning a £1m UK Lotto prize and also shared it with his family. In the USA, 84-year-old Gloria MacKenzie from Florida won a $590 million Powerball jackpot.
The couple won £18,139,352 with a Lucky Dip UK Lotto ticket purchased from their local newsagents. Early on Sunday morning Shirley checked the results and read out the numbers 05-08-09-10-38-53 to her husband saying, ‘who’d have those numbers?’ and was shocked when he replied, ‘I do’.
Despite Shirley not always being happy with her husband playing the lottery, they’d joked a big UK Lotto win was “just a matter of time.” Plans for their UK Lotto winnings include downsizing to a bungalow and leaving the home they’ve lived in for 57 years. Dennis also fancies buying a 1930s style suit and a car with a chauffeur due to his dodgy knee.
Their daughter Tina also fancies buying her dream car, a Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible. Another Porsche fan was Aricka Bell from California, USA, who wanted a Porsche Boxer after her $750,000 win on a $10 Crossword Ca$h scratch card.
She’s a big sports fan and fancies going to next year’s Rugby Union World Cup in Japan or see the British Lions in South Africa, and perhaps like £63,000 UK Lotto winners Sarah and Marcus Savill go to a Grand Prix. Another English couple, Jenny and John Taylor, went to see England’s cricket team play in Australia after a £137,945.40 EuroMillions win.
Tina told how her father broke the news to her about the UK Lotto win. “It’s not every day your parents call you at 8am to tell you they have won the lottery.” Her parents have always said they played for their family and Tina said, “I can’t tell you how pleased I am that they did!”
