A group of nurses from Cleland Hospital in Motherwell in Scotland won £1m in the April 20 EuroMillions draw but the woman in charge of checking their tickets nearly forgot to do so.
The syndicate is comprised of 15 nurses and each will receive just over £66,666 after their EuroMillions ticket won the big prize in the Millionaire Maker part of the draw. June Fraser is responsible for checking their EuroMillions tickets and the 58-year-old says that that’s usually done by using the National Lottery app and that’s just what she did on April 21.
The first ticket wasn’t a winner and she thought that was Friday’s so nearly didn’t check the second believing it was for a future draw. Thankfully, she did, and the app told her it had won a £1m EuroMillions prize. Immediately she started contacting other syndicate members with news of their EuroMillions win. She wanted to contact everyone but after a few more calls she was too “hyper” to call anymore but still went into work that afternoon.
Keeping a winning lottery ticket is an important task, for example Fred Morgan from Michigan, USA, hid his $1m winning Mega Millions ticket in a bag of flour. In England, Tanya Smith won £100,000 on a £100,000 Red scratch card and hid it in her sports bra.
June told reporters that she pinned the winning EuroMillions ticket to the inside of her nurse’ uniform for safe keeping. Then when she got back home it was hid under her cutlery draw.
Hospital syndicates have had success in the past. One at the Neath Port Talbot Hospital in Wales won a £25m EuroMillions jackpot last year. It’s the latest big win in Scotland after Tommy and Linda Parker scooped a £5m UK Lotto top prize last November.
The EuroMillions winners already have plenty of plans for how to spend their windfall. Holidays are always a popular choice and destinations planned include Canada and Sri Lanka. Some want to go on a cruise, just like $100,000 Powerball winner Stephen Strickland from Maryland, USA.
For 59-year-old Carol Hamlyn, the EuroMillions win means she can fully retire in November and spend more time with her four children and three grandchildren.
Other ideas include buying new cars and a motorbike. They also want to buy staff, patients and families a bumper batch of cakes and goodies to celebrate their EuroMillions win.
