The largest Oz Lotto jackpot that’s been seen in Australia over the last five years has been won after eight weeks, by two different ticket holders.
The $70 million Oz Lotto jackpot has been climbing for eight weeks until it reaches its summit, when one ticket holder in New South Wales and another in Victoria each matched the numbers in the drawing. Earlier this year two winners from Victoria and Western Australia came forward to claim a $15 million Oz Lotto jackpot.
The NSW winner was a man from Lithgow, who told Oz Lotto officials that he was “blown away” after discovering he had won a $35 million share of the jackpot, but the winner in Victoria is yet to come forward. A Lotto 649 winner from Ontario in Canada also described himself as ‘blown away’ after winning $9 million.
When he was called by Oz Lotto officials, the NSW winner told them that it was the best news he’d heard in a long time but had to stop and make sure they weren’t joking with him first. “It goes without saying I’ll be helping the kids out and I’m sure my retirement plans will be fast-tracked,” said the winner, who is in his 50s. A man from California was also able to fast track his retirement after winning $10 million on a lottery scratch card, while a woman from Darlington in England won £30,000 on the People’s Postcode Lottery just two days after retiring.
The mystery winner from Victoria is being urged by Oz Lotto officials to check their entry, but despite their ticket being registered they couldn’t be contacted on the phone as their details were incomplete. The winning ticket was purchased online from Australia’s official lottery website.
The $70 million Oz Lotto jackpot wasn’t the only big win in this week’s drawing, and more than 1.17 million more prizes were also won across Australia, totally a value of more than $26.4 million. The Oz Lotto, now that the huge $70 million jackpot has been won, will now be worth $2 million when the jackpot starts again next week. Three winners from across Australia shared in a $50 million Oz Lotto jackpot which was the largest of last year, with one winner coming from each Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.
