It’s always a bit of a shock when you win the lottery, but it was an even bigger one for George and Sandra Kinghorn from Peterhead, Scotland. The couple were on their way back home from a holiday in Tenerife when they received an email informing them that they had won some money in the EuroMillions draw held on Friday October 31. Eager to get to bed after their long journey, it wasn’t until the following day they discovered they were millionaires.

Offshore worker George, 60, said: “I always play the EuroMillions lottery online so I have had e-mails before with small wins. We were driving back from the airport when I quickly scanned the e-mail and thought it would be the same size of win that I’d had before. I never once thought I’d scooped such a high prize. I didn’t open it and when I got home I put my phone on charge and went to bed.”

It wasn’t until 6.30pm on Saturday that the lucky EuroMillions winner went online as he went to put his lines on for that evening’s UK Lotto draw. When he finally read the email about his EuroMillions win he was in shock: “I actually turned the computer off and back on again – I was sure it was a mistake.” He wasn’t sure if it said £1,000 or £1,000,000 and asked Sandra, 53, to double-check. They were in total shock when they realized they were millionaires.

Despite the big EuroMillions win, the lucky winner headed off to work just four days after becoming a millionaire. Because of his shift patterns at work it wasn’t for another three weeks before he could finalise his prize.

The couple, who have a grown-up son, George, 35, say they have no idea how they are going to spend their EuroMilllions winnings: George says he has no intention of giving up his job. He told reporters: “We haven’t even had a chance to celebrate yet. We have just been taking it all in. I like to play golf on my time off, so I think I will take a few friends away for a week’s golfing.”
