A group of friends who are regulars at a pub in East Sussex are toasting their good fortune this week after they won £1 million on the Millionaire Raffle of the EuroMillions lottery.Charlotte Maynard, the landlady of the Jolly Boatman in Newhaven, celebrated her £1 million lottery win together with her mother and four of her regulars after their syndicate came up trumps in the EuroMillions lottery. Mary Maynard, Michael Read, Michelle Fowler, Michael Skinner and Maureen Daly all make up the group dubbed “the lucky six” from the Jolly Boatman, and they were all present to receive their prize from lottery officials. Each of the syndicate members will receive £166,000 from the EuroMillions ticket they bought at their local Co-op store in Newhaven Square for the draw on January 9th. Michael Read, who purchased the winning ticket, told lottery officials that he planned to watch the draw at home before heading to the Jolly Boatman for a nightcap. However, as soon as he realised the EuroMillions ticket had won the Millionaire Raffle, he immediately called the pub which Charlotte and Mary Maynard have run together for more than 15 years, to break the good news. Mary Maynard, the syndicate leader, said that she couldn’t believe the news when her daughter ran screaming up the stairs from the pub, and at first thought something awful had happened.“When she shared the news, my panic quickly turned to joy,” said the pub matriarch, continuing to say that they popped open a bottle of champagne in the pub as soon as they heard the good EuroMillions news. “Our regulars really are the salt of the earth and their reaction to our good fortune shows what good people they are” said Mrs Maynard of the atmosphere in the pub after the syndicate revealed their EuroMillions win. “Ultimately we will all be winners because some of the money will go towards sprucing the space up a bit to make it even nicer for our customers.”The other syndicate members admitted to lottery officials that they haven’t yet decided how they will spend their portion of the EuroMillions winnings.Don’t miss tonight draw: the estimated jackpot is £24m.
