A 13-strong syndicate of factory workers from Spalding in England are celebrating after winning £1m in the EuroMillions draw held on Friday January 16.

Their winning EuroMillions ticket was purchased from the Co-operative petrol station in Spalding. The syndicate members all work at the food manufacturing firm, Bakkavor in Spalding, and each will receive £76,000 from their EuroMillions win.

Syndicate leader Mark Waters, 50, explained how the day after the EuroMillions draw he received a dozen or so missed calls from fellow syndicate member Karen Taylor, who works with him in the soup department. As Karen usually takes him to work he feared she may have had an accident. When he finally heard from her, she screamed down the phone “I don’t know whether it’s true but I think we’ve won the lottery.”

Rather than spreading the news right away, the couple decided it was best to contact Camelot and get their EuroMillions lottery win confirmed. Once they had done that, they finally told the rest of the syndicate members the great news. They didn’t initially believe him but eventually the news sank in and Mark said “the whole room went mad.”

The syndicate have only been playing for 10 weeks. Initially there were 20 members but seven have pulled out, thus missing out on the big EuroMillions win.

Mark knew exactly what he wanted to buy first with his EuroMillions lottery winnings. He went out and bought a new lawn mower because he’s wanted to replace his old one for years. Now he’s done that, he’s planning a holiday in Barbados with his partner to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

He added: “You’ve never seen a group of more ecstatic people in your life; we certainly are the lucky 13. £76,000 doesn’t mean we can all give up work but it means we can do all those things we’ve wanted to do but just haven’t been able to afford.”

Other spending plans for the winning EuroMillions lottery syndicate include “nice holidays, home improvements and new cars – all the things we weren’t able to do before” said the jubilant syndicate leader.
