When England travel down under to take on the Australian cricket team for the Ashes next year, they’ll have a couple of extra supporters cheering them on. John Taylor from Eton in Surrey, England won £137,945.40 in the May 12 EuroMillions draw and he and his wife, Jenny, are heading down under.

John, who has managed the grounds at Eton College for 21 years, matched the five main numbers and a Lucky Star in the EuroMillions draw. The winning numbers were: 14-29-30-40-46 and the Two Lucky Stars 03 and 06.

The 60-year-old decided to play the draw as his online account had £9.70 in it from a win he got the previous week. “I was winding down from a busy day, I’m not sure what prompted me to play but I thank my lucky stars that I did!”

The morning after the EuroMillions lottery draw he was checking his emails and saw that he had one about lottery results. He had some work correspondence to go through first and then got round to checking his other mail. He couldn’t believe it when he saw that the email was telling him that he’d won £137,945.40.

The grandfather-of-three ran upstairs to tell his wife the news of their EuroMillions win, and she only believed him when she double-checked the numbers. The couple, who have been married 38 years, decided not to tell anyone about their win and headed off to work as normal. Jenny manages the Charteris Day Centre for the Elderly and admits “It was just the strangest day at work”. Her husband had to keep out of the way of people and was “Grinning like a Cheshire Cat.”

Just like EuroMillions winner Anita Reid, the couple will be travelling abroad. John has always wanted to see England play cricket in Australia but felt it was a dream that’d never happen. But EuroMillions makes dreams come true and he’ll be booking his tickets soon. The winning couple also plan to head to New Zealand where Jenny has family. John and Jenny will also be able to pay off the mortgage on the Sussex retirement cottage they had just bought.
