A 24-member syndicate from the Ballybrown GAA Club in Limerick, Ireland, have won nearly €200,000 in last Friday’s EuroMillions draw.

It’s the latest big win in Ireland after a couple won a €5.3m Irish Lotto prize in October. A month before that an Irish family said they’d buy a house with an indoor slide with part of their €7,384,790 Irish Lotto jackpot.

Theresa O’Neill is responsible for collecting two Euros from each syndicate member every Monday. She then buys the tickets for the Tuesday and Friday draws and checks the results. There are 24 different families in the syndicate that was set up around a year ago after O’Neill’s father-in-law inspired them by winning a €120,000 lottery prize.

Syndicates really can be successful. Last week we told you of the friends who won a $106m Mega Millions jackpot. In Canada a syndicate recently won a $60m Lotto Max jackpot.

O’Neill recalled the moment she checked their winning EuroMillions ticket. She was with her husband on Saturday morning and said “something felt different” when she saw the winning numbers and quickly asked him to check them again and they really were big winners.

They headed over to Hayes shop where the ticket had been purchased, and the storekeeper was expecting a jubilant customer to come through his door as he’d had a call from the National Lottery telling him his store had sold a valuable ticket.

When this particular EuroMillions ticket was purchased, it got stuck in the printer and it tore at the bottom. The shopkeeper told her “That’s the lucky one Theresa” and that certainly proved to be the case. At least they didn’t tape together their ticket as American Arvella Newman did with a Virginia Lottery ripped ticket.

It’s not just lotteries the syndicate members have had luck in. Ollie O’Connor won €13,000 in a local Mick Mackey Stand Draw at the weekend. Some of the winnings will go back to the GAA club. Theresa said, “We’ll have a night there to celebrate and the money will go back into the club in many ways through various things.”
