Christmas Day is supposed to be full of happy memories. It certainly was for John Gill from Warrington in Cheshire, England, after he won £1m in the EuroMillions Mega Friday draw.

The truck repair company owner had only purchased his ticket an hour before the December 25 EuroMillions draw took place. Stephanie Harkin won £10,000 on a National Lottery Dream Riches scratchcard purchased during last minute Christmas shopping.

The 56-year-old, who has been married to accountant Patricia for over 30 years and has two children, said his win was the best ever ending to 2015. He didn’t believe his win at first and initially thought it might be £100, £1,000 or £100,000 but then realized he’d won £1m. “I just kept staring at the noughts, looking away and then looking again thinking ‘am I going cross-eyed? This just cannot be true!’” said the shocked winner.

David Hausmann from Iowa, USA, thought he’d won $5,000 on a Winter White Super Crossword scratchcard but had in fact won $50,000. Raul Ahumada initially believed his $25m Mega Millions win was just $25,000.

The £1m EuroMillions winner is planning on buying a white Jaguar. He also wants to go to Australia and the Grand Canyon. £1m UK Lotto winner Clive Osbourne from Wales also went travelling after his big win.

“All those things that have been on our bucket list can now become a reality” he said. But “being able to look after our family is also so important to us” said the jubilant EuroMillions winner.

His son recently had his mobile phone stolen and John joked that he might win the lottery on Christmas Day and buy him a new one. “Never did I really believe this wish and dream would come true.” Gill’s first purchase was new mobile phones for his two children.

Trevor and Pat Boyle from Surrey, England, won a EuroMillions holiday prize but took the cash alternative. Not so for this couple, who will be going on a luxury holiday to Scandinavia with a private maid and chef, which John describes as “a once in a lifetime experience.”
