A syndicate of 16 engineers from Scotland have found themselves recipients of a huge £1 million EuroMillions prize, less than a year after they started playing the lottery together.

The group, who all work at MJ Ventilation in Coupar Angus, Perth, and Kinross, began buying EuroMillions lucky dips tickets together in February, and they only bought tickets for Friday drawings. But now, each of the 16-strong group of co-workers will receive £62,500, and it was the syndicate leader Darren Graham who had to break the good news to his friends and colleagues, just like the syndicate leader of a group of co-workers from a Canadian hardware store had to, after they won $55 million on the Lotto Max, and when a syndicate of ten IT workers shared £109,182 on the EuroMillions earlier this year.

Mr. Graham told lottery officials that he went into his local store to check the tickets, where the sales advisor told that “we had won ‘a substantial amount of money’ on one of them,” but then of course the store wasn’t able to tell him how much it was or pay it out, so Mr Graham decided to check the results online. “As soon as I saw the matching UK millionaire maker code I realised and it suddenly hit me – we’d just won £1m.”

Engineers have won the lottery before, and in fact just last year two retired professionals scored big, as Vic Eden from Staffordshire took home £1 million on the UK Lotto, and Bernie Delbridge from Bracknell scooped himself £200,000 on the EuroMillions lottery. The syndicate leader said that it wasn’t until he told the rest of the group at work on the Monday that he begun to realise their fortune himself. “Their reactions were so different, from jumping up and down while screaming, to complete and utter disbelief.”

The EuroMillions winner said that the whole group feels like they’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster ever since, and so they haven’t had a great amount of time to think about how they’ll spend their winnings, but Mr Graham has a plan for his share. “Personally, I’ll definitely be looking into putting a deposit down on a new house,” he said, just like a recent UK Lotto winner who won £443,377 and bought her own home after years of renting, and he added that this Christmas is going to be pretty spectacular for all of them.
