Records are there to be broken and in May 2017, Mavis Wynczyk won the largest sole winner Powerball prize. The Massachusetts resident was the sole winner and won the $758.7m top prize. After taking a lump sum and paying taxes, the lucky player was left with $336m.As soon as she discovered her fantastic luck, she made a phone call. It wasn’t to a relative but her supervisor at work. Mavis immediately quit the job she’d had for 32 years. Talking about her jackpot win, she said: “I had a pipe dream, and my pipe dream finally came true.” The Powerball winner added that she wanted to be alone, hide in her bed and work out what to do with her winnings. Little has been heard of her since, but you can bet she’s enjoying her lottery fortune.

‘Jane Doe’

Not all winners want to reveal their identity. That’s what happened when a woman from New Hampshire, USA, known only as ‘Jane Doe’ won a $559.7m Powerball jackpot.  She went to court to remain anonymous and won her hearing, so we’ll never know who the winner was.The next Powerball draw is on Wednesday 23 September and the jackpot is $22m.
