Tasty Cheeseburgers and a $1 million Scratchcard Win

Going out for a meal with a friend can be an enjoyable experience. It was even better for Kevin Poole from Franklinville in North Carolina, USA, as on September 1, he won $1 million on a scratchcard.

The lucky player had gone to Don Lee’s Grocery and Grill in Willow Spring.  He was repaying a favour as he took a co-worker electrician for a meal. The day before his friend had paid the bill, so now it was his turn. Little did he know that in a few hours, he’d never have to hope he had enough cash to pay for a meal.

They’d chosen to go to the Grill as they make really good cheeseburgers. That’s what Kevin had and some tasty onion rings too. Could the day get any better after such a delicious meal? Before he had his meal, Kevin made a very important purchase. He’d bought a $10,000,000 Colossal Cash scratchcard, costing him $30. It proved to be the best purchase he’d ever made.

He enjoyed his cheeseburger and onion rings before deciding to see if his scratchcard had won anything.  Then came the surprise of his life when scanning his ticket with the North Carolina Lottery mobile app. It told him he had a winner and should pay a visit to the Lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

Big Decision

Some winners take a while to claim their prize but not this one. He claimed his prize the same day. He then had a decision to make over how to accept his winnings. Rather than his win being paid as an annuity of $50,000 a year over 20 years, he accepted the lump sum of $600,000. After federal and state taxes were paid, he went home with $424,509.

“I'm over excited now!" said the scratchcard winner. He already has plenty of plans for his winnings. He’s already building a house so this windfall will allow him to buy more land. He also wants to build a motocross track that his sons will have a great time riding on.
