The January 2023 win was the second largest in Mega  Millions history. It was just ahead of the $1.337 billion that was won in July of last year. On that occasion, the winning ticket was sold in Illinois. It was purchased by two players who decided to take the one-off lump sum payment and shared $780.5 million before the taxman took their share.

What’s the largest ever Mega Millions win? Well, the record goes to the $1.537 billion jackpot won five years ago. The October 28 top prize was won by a ticket sold in South Carolina. That draw saw the cash value of the jackpot being $913.7 million. We don’t know who the lucky winner was. 

Not since April 18 has the Mega Millions jackpot been won. A couple more rollovers and next week will see the largest ever top prize. It still has a way to go to become the largest US lottery jackpot. That was the $2.048 billion Powerball jackpot won last November.
