A man from Massachusetts in the USA has hit a home run with a $100,000 Mass Cash win, thanks to his love for the Boston Red Sox.
The baseball team won the 2018 World Series, and big fan Jim Aylward Jr. decided to use the jersey numbers of five key players. He bought a ticket for Mass Cash, a state lottery game, and took home the grand prize.
The winning numbers were 11, 16, 19, 22 and 25. They represent the Red Sox players Rafael Devers, Andrew Benintendi, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rick Porcello and Steve Pearce. All five numbers were selected in the November 5, Mass Cash drawing.
The 84-year-old great grandfather won the $100,000 grand prize, all thanks to his beloved Red Sox. “I was shocked when I won,” Mr Aylward told lottery officials when asked about his win. He continued to say that he’s won the odd $250 prize on lottery games before, but the biggest prize he’d ever taken home previously was $5,000.
“When the team started to get really good, those were my favourite players,” Mr Aylward explained. “I’ve been playing those numbers for quite a while.”
The lucky lottery winner has five children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, so his $100,000 prize will certainly not go to waste. “I’ve already given out a lot of the money to my five kids,” the winner said.
However, he has made sure to keep some money back for himself. He said that he plans to take some trips to Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut. He may even visit some casinos in New Jersey to see if he can double, or triple his luck!
Other sports fans have been big winners thanks to the love of their team. A man from Essex, England won £9 million on the UK Lotto after celebrating his local football team’s win. A big fan of the Baltimore Ravens called himself the “Ravens Millionaire” after winning $1 million on the Mega Millions earlier this year.
